Welcome to Kiel, Bienvenidos a Kiel, Willkommen in Kiel!

We cordially invite you to attend the 20th Colloquium on Latin American Geosciences in Germany. This conference has been held every two years over the last 40 years, with the main goal being to foster cooperation between scientists working in Latin America. The outcome of our past conferences clearly demonstrates the successful promotion of collaboration and fruitful exchange of ideas between the geoscience disciplines. Multidisciplinary research on the key processes affecting the character of continental and oceanic lithosphere and continental margins will be the focus of the upcoming conference.

Water is the source of Kiel's identity. The city was founded on a protected fjord of the Baltic Sea in the Middle Ages. The navy and shipyards turned it into a major seaport and it has become one of the major European gateways to Scandinavia. The city has achieved international recognition through the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), the largest annual event in northern Europe. The recent award of the Excellent Cluster "Future Ocean" to institutes in and near Kiel (Univ. of Kiel, IFM-GEOMAR, Weltwirtschaft Inst. and Muthesius Hochschule) has confirmed Kiel as a center of excellence in marine research.

Hans-Jürgen Götze, Kaj Hoernle and Wolfgang Rabbel
